The Boise Cascade Catalog Mistake That Cost Me $760 in Granite City, IL

In February 2024, I approved a $760 order for Boise Cascade engineered wood products and signed off on a mistake that ended up costing closer to $2,900. This is not a story about a bad supplier or a bad product. It's a story about how I used the Boise Cascade catalog incorrectly—and what I do now before every order.

I decided it didn't apply because the interior beam had a wall directly below it on the floor plan. That wall wasn't below the point load in the joist bay; it was below the beam support, but the reaction still created a concentrated load on the adjacent joist. I had already diagnosed the building in my head, and I was wrong.

This is the part that still frustrates me. The information that would have stopped the mistake was in the catalog all along. The problem wasn't a hidden spec. The problem was that I skimmed a technical page with the confidence of someone looking at a product list.

The real cost

The invoice for that part of the order was $760. But the true cost was bigger.

The wrong joists couldn't be used, so the material had to be reordered. That added a delivery fee and pushed the job back by three days.   3. Did another person review the order before I sent it?
